This is an antique advertising token issued by the Excelsior Shoe Company of Portsmouth, Ohio, between July 1910 and January 1914. The company created the token to associate its products with the new Boy Scout movement that began in 1910. The obverse side of the medal features a detailed image of a scout mounted on a horse and the inscription "The Original 'Boy Scout' Shoe For Boys" along with the date "July 1910". The reverse side features several symbols of good fortune, including a swastika (which was a common good luck symbol at the time before its later appropriation), a horseshoe, a four-leaf clover, and a wishbone.
